The Connection Between Zyrtec and Food Allergies

Zyrtec has made a strong splash in the marketplace as what’s known as a second generation antihistamine, with fewer of the properties that cause drowsiness and decreased brain function in those that take it to treat their allergies. This is good news for those with severe allergies, as sometimes the side effects from such drugs are as bad or worse as the original symptoms they are supposed to treat. However, there has recently been some confusion as to whether or not these new antihistamines are effective in treating certain food allergies.

While Zyrtec has proven very effective when it comes to treating a host of allergies, including allergic reactions to pets, pollen, flowers, and dust mites, there is no evidence that it is or ever will be effective in the treatment of food allergies. This is because most food allergies, though often producing similar symptoms, are triggered in a different part of the body than most indoor and outdoor allergies. While the symptoms may look and feel the same, they are not indicative of the same root effects.

Severe food allergies can go beyond making the user feel under the weather. The worst of these allergies can be intensely life threatening. For this reason, it is vital to consult with your doctor about what you should or should not take to best keep your food allergies under control.
