Cooking for People with Strawberry and Nut Allergies

On first glance, you may think that there could be nothing more different than a strawberry and a nut, like a walnut or a cashew. However, the two type of food are more similar than you think--because a strawberry is actually classified as a nut from a botanical point of view. This means that those who suffer from nut allergies can also suffer from an allergy to strawberries, as they all produce the same allergens which can lead to severe allergic reactions.

So what are you supposed to cook for someone who suffers from a strawberry and nut allergy? Peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwiches are obviously out of the question, but there are a variety of other foods that are just as good for you but without all of the potential allergens.

For example, consider substituting the ingredients that people with allergies are allergic to with other ingredients. There are tons of soy alternatives to all types of foods, and there may just be a soy alternative out there for the food allergy that someone you know suffers with. Furthermore, for those who are allergic to strawberries, consider looking for a unique variety that is lacking all of the allergens of traditional strawberries. Called Sofar, this type of strawberry has a far reduced number of allergen, so you may want to consider including that item the next time you have a craving for some strawberry shortcake.
