Despite being a relatively underused food in the United States, there are quite a few people who suffer from guava allergies. This fruit has been consumed for centuries, and is mostly common to Central and South America where it constitutes a major part of the public's diet. Furthermore, it contains a variety of healthy vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, fiber, and potassium.

The most common types of allergies related to guava are the typical upper respiratory problems. Depending on the severity of your allergic reaction, if you eat guava, you could suffer from any condition from a mildly swollen mouth or throat to a near fatal inflammation of the throat. Inhalation allergies are generally less severe, with only rhinitis and a mild cough as the two most common allergic reactions to guava. Even if you are not allergic to guava itself, eating too much guava can erode the enamel off of your teeth over time.

Those who suffer from a food allergy to guava may also be allergic to the guava wood or to clothing died with the guava tree's leaves. Coming into contact with the various plant products of guava has also led to contact dermatitis which includes an itchy, red, sometimes painful rash where the guava came into contact with your skin.
