Allergy to Wheat and Gluten

Allergy to Wheat and Gluten Intolerance

An allergy to wheat and gluten intolerance is believed to be suffered by more people than are able to easily detect what they are suffering from. This allergy to wheat, which affects few people, can manifest itself either because the wheat is eaten or the wheat dust is inhaled. Inhaling wheat dust causes symptoms very similar to an asthmatic attack. Bakers suffer these regularly with as many as 30% percent of them having this problem when dealing with wheat flour. The symptoms can also include fatigue, depression, diarrhea and bloating.

Being allergic to gluten is a different but related problem. When you understand what is in wheat you will find that one of the proteins wheat contains is called gluten. One in ten people suffer from intolerance to gluten that is called celiac disease. People with this problem are unable to properly absorb the proteins. This is an intolerance it is not an allergy. Gluten is not just in wheat, it can also be found in oats, rye and barley as well.

Unfortunately when you discover that you have an allergy to wheat and gluten you must make major changes to your diet. There is no other choice to ensure good health. The list of things that must no longer be eaten is a big one and includes breads, crackers, enriched flours, malt vinegar, beer and baking powder to name just a few. Foods are now labeled more clearly, as of two years ago, to be specific if they have wheat flours or gluten in them.
