Allergic Reactions to Ferrets

Could You Suffer From Allergic Reactions to Ferrets?

In a word, yes you could. Some of the most common allergic reactions occur because of the presence of pets, particularly those with fur. People suffer allergies to what’s known as “pet dander,” and this is common in everything from dogs to cats to, indeed, ferrets.

If you suffer from the common symptoms of allergies when around or dealing with a pet ferret, you could be allergic to this dander. There are no widely accepted tests for ferret allergies, so the diagnosis is largely done on a case by case basis, typically after the person diagnosed has had such contact.

Treatment for allergic reactions to ferrets are also limited mostly to simple avoidance of the irritant. Studies have shown little evidence to support allergy shots or medications being helpful in the fight against these types of allergies. There are some medicines available that may help reduce the symptoms of allergic reactions to cats, and these may help in a situation with ferrets, given the similarities in fur. Again, though, the studies on this subject are not as extensive as one might hope, so you would have to try it for yourself and see if you noticed any improvement.

Of course, a simple system of avoidance may be easier said than done if you have a ferret as a pet and wish to keep it. At that point, all you can do is limit your direct contact as much as possible and take as many precautions as you can. After that, you’ll have to determine your level of reaction and what you can personally deal with in relation to your pet.
